故事大概

《黑暗的心》記錄了船長馬洛(Charles Marlow)在一艘停靠於倫敦河的船上對同行人仕講述他年輕時到非洲剛果的經歷。馬洛受僱於一家比利時公司，到最近成立的剛果國(Congo Free State)擔任一艘輪船的船長。 一到剛果，馬洛就開始聽到有關公司另一名員工庫爾茨(Kurtz)的謠言，他駐紮在剛果河上游數百英里的該國內陸深處。

馬洛在倫敦泰晤士河船上對同伴說。意指英國也曾經是殖民主義的受害者。在 19 世紀下半葉，種族優越理論被用來使殖民主義帝國建設合法化，馬洛無法接受這種虛假。
